In 2011 we started working on a project for KCC’s Families and Social Care Head of Strategic Commissioning looking at the dementia care pathway. The emphasis of the project was co-production, working with people affected by dementia to inform the project and shape the outcomes.
We started by speaking to a wide range of people; people living with dementia, carers, frontline workers, and professionals in the field to build a picture of what it is like to live with dementia. People were open and honest with us about sharing their experiences and letting us know where things worked well and where things could have been improved. The next step was to work with people to come up with ideas and solutions to some of the problems identified. This phase resulted in a lot of ideas and potential projects, far too many to make all of them happen. Eventually we came to four ideas that we all felt would make a difference and also be achievable:
